Conference Purpose & Design
This first ever Missouri Statewide Conference for Nonprofit
Organizations will have an interactive, participatory format which will
provide lots of opportunities for dialogue, sharing proven and promising
practices and networking. The purpose of the conference is:
-
to bring Missouri nonprofit and philanthropic organizations from
across the entire nonprofit sector together, to build our identity
and strengthen our voice
-
to examine state-level public policy issues which
affect the sector
-
to help nonprofit organizations understand and
effectively engage in the public policy arena, particularly at the
state level
-
to explore the level of interest in establishing a
Missouri association of nonprofit organizations.
Featured Speakers
Diana Aviv is the president and CEO of Independent Sector, the
national leadership forum for charities, foundations, and corporate
giving programs committed to advancing the common good in America and
around the world. A nonprofit, nonpartisan coalition of approximately
575 organizations that collectively represents tens of thousands of
charitable groups across the country, Independent Sector leads,
strengthens, and mobilizes the charitable community in order to fulfill
our vision of a just and inclusive society of active citizens, vibrant
communities, effective institutions, and a healthy democracy. A noted
expert on the major issues affecting the national nonprofit and
philanthropic community, Diana is a frequent speaker on the
accountability and transparency of nonprofit organizations, the
financial state of the nonprofit sector, the role of civil society in
democracy, and civic engagement. She has testified before Congress and
has been quoted in print, broadcast, and online media outlets such as
The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall
Street Journal, and National Public Radio.
Diana also serves as executive director of the Panel on the Nonprofit
Sector, an independent panel of charitable and philanthropic leaders
convened by Independent Sector in October 2004 at the encouragement of
the leadership of the Senate Finance Committee.
Dennis R. Young, Ph.D.,
Professor of Public Administration and Urban
Studies at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State
University, is a widely respected authority in the nonprofit sector.
Dr. Young helped establish
the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Case Western. He is
also president and founding CEO of the National Center on Nonprofit
Enterprise based in Arlington, Virginia. He was also a former President
of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary
Action (ARNOVA) where he recently received a lifetime Award for Distinguished
Achievement and Leadership in Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Research.
He has written many articles and several books, including co-authoring
Corporate Philanthropy at the Crossroads, and Economics for Nonprofit
Managers. He is founding editor of the journal Nonprofit Management &
Leadership. He was recently named to the NonProfit Times "Power and
Influence Top 50" list.
Sam
Singh is
the board
chair of the National Council of Nonprofit Association and senior advisor to the president and chief executive officer of the Michigan
Nonprofit Association (MNA). MNA is a nonprofit organization dedicated
to promoting an effective nonprofit sector by acting as a convener of
organizations key to the nonprofit community; encouraging voluntary
giving and service; and taking an active role in nonprofit public
policy.
Prior to accepting this position, Mr. Singh served as director of the
Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM), a state association of volunteer
centers dedicated to mobilizing people and resources to deliver creative
solutions to community problems.
He previously worked with the Points of Light Foundation and the
Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) as a Youth Consultant.
During his tenure, he assisted in establishing President Clinton's
national service program, AmeriCorps, in Michigan; guided the
development of the Governor's statewide recognition program for
volunteerism; and advised the Michigan Youth Progressive Action Council,
a national model for youth empowerment.
Mr. Singh is a graduate of Michigan State University (MSU). Mr. Singh
was re-elected to the East Lansing City Council in November 2003 and
currently serves as the Mayor for the city. He serves on the board of
directors for the Points of Light Foundation, National Council of
Nonprofit Association, Michigan Association of United Ways and the
Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA)
Robert
Egger is the Founder and President of the DC Central Kitchen. At the
Kitchen, food donated by regional foodservice businesses is used to fuel
the Kitchen’s nationally recognized culinary arts job training program,
where unemployed men and women learn marketable skills while donations
are converted into balanced meals.
In
Washington, Robert Chairs the Mayor’s Commission on Nutrition and Street
Sense, Washington’s “homeless” newspaper. He is also on the Board of the
Food Systems Leadership Institute, which is based at UNC in Chapel Hill,
NC and RESULTS. He was the Co-Convener of the Nonprofit Congress, held
in Washington DC in 2006
Robert was included in the Non Profit Times' list of the “50 Most
Powerful and Influential Nonprofit Leaders of 2006”. He is also the
recipient of the 2005 Volunteers of America Community Service award and
the 2004 James Beard Foundations Humanitarian of the Year award. He has
also been named an Oprah Angel, a Washingtonian of the Year, a Point of
Light and one of the Ten Most Caring People in America, by the Caring
Institute. He is also a 13-gallon donor to the American Red Cross.
Robert’s book on the non-profit sector,
Begging for Change, The Dollars and
Sense of Making Nonprofits Responsive, Efficient and Rewarding For All,
was released in 2004 by HarperCollins. It was recently awarded the 2005
McAdams Prize for “Best Nonprofit Management Book” by the Alliance for
Nonprofit Management.

Conference Details
The
conference will be held at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City,
Missouri and begin at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 8, 2007, and runs
through 2:30 p.m. on November 9. The registration fee is $200 per participant.
Note: the conference fee is inclusive of
resource materials, breakfast and lunch, and receptions and breaks.
