Session D: Assessing Impact: An Introduction to Outcomes Assessment

Most nonprofit staff members care about making a difference in the world.  But how do you know if your organization is making a difference?  And how can you successfully communicate your organization’s results and value to donors, funders, and the community?  This session will offer an overview of a process by which we can assess and communicate about our results in effective ways.

Presenter: Joan DeMerchant, Principal, Joan R. DeMerchant Consulting (a partner in the New John Shehane Group) and Associates and Senior Fellow, Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership at UMKC

Session G: Introduction to Nonprofit Governance and Boards

Every nonprofit organization has a board of directors and, sooner or later, every nonprofit leader will work with a board.  This session will offer an introduction to the purpose and work of the board of directors, including a discussion of legal expectations of boards and their members, the roles and responsibilities of a typical board, and how effective boards work with the staff of the organization to help accomplish the organization’s mission and vision.

Presenter: David Stallings, CPA, MPA, Senior Fellow, Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership at UMKC

Session H: Action-Oriented Strategic Planning

Most nonprofit organizations know they should be doing strategic planning, but many are afraid of getting involved in a process that will absorb a lot of time yet show little in the way of results.  This session will provide an introduction to an efficient strategic planning approach that is targeted to making things happen and achieving results.

Presenter: Rhonda Gerke, Ph.D. candidate, Fellow, Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership.
